Get Up

September 4, 2012

This is for the failures. The losers, the defeated and non-winners. If you’ve ever fallen in your life, this one’s for you.

GET UP! So, you messed up a project. Failed an exam and have to repeat a class. I did that twice! But I don’t bother counting how many times I’ve had to re-take exams. This isn’t about me. This isn’t that much about you either. But if you’ve struggled with an achievement, here’s why you need to read on.

Life is cyclical. Anyone can tell, everyone has different ways of explaining it. Everybody fails. The ones who succeed aren’t the ones who stop failing. That’s nonsense. Everyone who succeeds, carries on fighting problems. Whether new, old or a mixture of both. The only way you’ll never have problems again, is if you’re six foot below. We can’t tell what’s in the after-life, too, so I guess we’re pretty much screwed. We aren’t, though. That’s the point! It’s how you look at it, that matters. More than often, a little change in perception, yields big changes in outcome. One loss today, several wins tomorrow – but would you really have won then, if you thought you were a loser?

Losses. Failures. Defeats. Downfalls. These words are labels, only important for one thing: to make you Acknowledge your current predicament without denial. They make you view yourself objectively. If you’re a loser, they make you say, ‘OK. You know what? I’m a loser. I suck at this.’ Therefore, you don’t from it. It doesn’t matter what you may have lost in, is. It could be a task, a situation, whatever, but what you need to do thereafter is ask yourself honestly, ‘Now, how do I get out of this? How can this work?’

That’s it! That’s ALL those words are good for, nothing else! Abraham Lincoln once said, ‘My great concern is not whether you have failed – but whether you are content with your failure.’ There’s another quote of equal profoundness from Steve Davis that goes, ‘It may not be your fault for being down, but it is your fault for not getting back up.’

Is your life changing? ‘Cause they shook mine. Maybe you heard of him, maybe you don’t – if you’re in business, it makes sense to read his books. Management guru Peter F. Drucker’s quote is thus, ‘What you have to do and the way you have to do it is incredibly simple. Whether you’re willing to do it, that’s another matter.’ Applicable to all, not just business. It applies to you because your life is your business! So what’s it gonna be, huh? You gonna be a failure? Think because you lost at something, you’re a total loser? Or, my personal favorite, can’t do something, ‘because it’s never been done before!’. Sure you can. For one, you can stop comparing yourself to the rest who wallow in their pity, limit the dramatic labels to a situation and not your entire life and begin from a point of pro-action! Do It!

Life is hard. We don’t know what to compare it to, but we know it. We can just tell. That, nonetheless, is life and simply in knowing such, life thereby becomes bearable. And when something becomes bearable, you can overcome the difficulties with grace and shine through. So, you stick it out. And when you persevere, you reduce things to a numbers game. When it comes down to and you slug it through a numbers game, you WIN!

Breathe

May 20, 2012

I forget to breathe. When I remember, I get paranoid & fret I may stop when my mind goes elsewhere again. That’s what this article is about, remembering that you have a chance to be with yourself and then letting go. My mind races most of the time, creativity calms it down, and I just bree-eathe. And man, is it good. Imagine being on Life Support – and not being able to breathe by yourself. What’s being in a coma like? All I know is there’s a bright side & dark side to breathing. The bright side is beautiful & the dark side is anguishing… to loved ones. Only nature knows what people in the dark side of breathing really go through. We use less than half of our brain. We must never forget that both the bright side & dark side constitute breathing – and how blurry their combination can be.

Do & Become are about chasing your dreams, full stop. This is about enjoying yourself while you’re at it. Breathe. Do it now, take a couple of deep breaths but before you do, think of a good thought for yourself. Go ahead! It’s not important what it is, what’s important is that you just inhaled goodness! 🙂 Now breathe Hope. And then Peace. OK, now Faith. And now, Your Dream! Take a minute & pause. You just rejuvenated yourself with all the power that you have: YOU! You may feel like an idiot, but that’s only ’cause it’s your first time. Several times today in your quiet-time, will take a portion of that jackass feeling tomorrow. It takes a month to form a new habit; try it! I don’t think you will not change.

I forget to breathe not because I want to, but because I allow myself to. We all shut down in our regular battles & hustles through the world. Society tells us to aspire & reach for ‘the top’, but it doesn’t do our bodies any good because we slowly shut down: Obesity, hypertension, fatigue, mental illnesses & all sorts of sicknesses. You quite simply burn out. You have to do what needs to be done but many of us, unknowingly, (have) put ourselves on the back-burner. I’ll be the first to admit that about myself. If I could live my youth all over again, I would give myself more time – to be myself and allow ME. Just breathe. All my youth, I’ve struggled & felt I never really took the time to stop and smell the roses. I hardly took the time to chill and take a moment appreciating to be me. Maybe I’m being a bit unfair to myself but a great deal of my teens & 20s felt like, I was chasing shadows. Can’t change the past, can only accept it.

Look in the mirror. Aren’t you good-looking? No, I mean seriously: Aren’t you the best-looking person you’ve ever seen? Be honest! Think of 5 things that make you bad. OK, now think of 1 thing that makes you really good. Doesn’t that thing like crash out the 5 ills? (If not, you’re being too modest about yourself, THINK HARDER!) When we vibe to our own rhythm, the world is a better place. The big, wide world with all its problems. Yet, when we appreciate ourselves and feel good, that big, wide world doesn’t seem like it could hold us down, with all its problems. You just feel like, ‘Whatever! It’s all good and I feel good!’ And as corny as it sounds, you actually feel that way. Think of the person you are. Isn’t that something? Man, it must be awesome to be you! And you still wanna hold a grudge against yourself for this or that thing you did or that happened? X(

No one gets through life with a clean sheet, EVERYBODY IS A F*CK-UP! Despite the obvious though, aren’t you still exceptional? I think you know the answer is YES.

Some people choose to acknowledge this, every day. Some mistake low self-esteem for humility. Like me, I used to be that way. Now I’m happy that I just typed ‘used to’. Where do you fit in? There’s no pressure, you’re not doing it for anyone but yourself. Live life at your pace, give yourself all the time you need. And then live it. Live through it. Do what makes you happy, that makes your heart sing. If your soul is euphoric like a child on the playground, you know you’ve hit the right spot. Live! Appreciate all that you are and all that you are not. No matter how hard anyone may try, no one will ever be like you! So, count your blessings afresh. Fulfill your dreams and stick through it, every day. Take one step after another. Instinct ensures you inhale & exhale. But while you’re at it – don’t forget to breathe!
